Enter your square footage, including the calculated waste allowance. Open areas require an additional 5% added to your actual net measurements.
Try our multiple room calculator. We will guide you room by room and help you determine your total square footage.
Waste allowance is a critical part of the overall square footage calculation.
Room angles, narrow spaces or running your flooring on a diagonal will demand a waste allowance greater than 5%, while wide open spaces require less allowance. See our suggestions below:
What is a waste allowance and why is it needed?
Adding a small waste allowance ensures your flooring installation will go smoothly. The extra material enables you to remove any pieces that may have excessive variation. Having some left over material is also recommended, as accidents can happen.
Recommended Allowance
- Narrow boards less than 3 1/2" wide, add 5-7% waste
- Wider planks over 3 1/2" to 7" wide, add 7-10%, especially in narrow hallways or small spaces.
- Larger tile sizes over 12"x24", add 10-12%, especially in smaller bathrooms and entrances.
- Laying tile or wood on a diagonal, add 10-15%, diagonal cuts result in more waste.
